    That mention of crest of a pelican feeding its young is creepier than it sounds. In heraldry, that’s almost always depicted as the mother stabbing herself with her beak to produce blood for the kids. Googling “pelican in piety” should fetch some good examples. Coincidentally, that crest is also the logo of Pelikan pens.

    In the middle ages they also believed that the father pelican would kill the chicks and the mom would bring them back to life.

    This is obviously late (playing catch-up on the last few episodes) but the image of the mother pelican feeding its young with its own blood was a symbol for Christ shedding his blood to save the souls of humanity.
