What I miss in the comments on this show is that nobody mentions Lord Dunsany’s: Hoard of the Gibbelings (1912) in comparison to Hoard of the wizard-beast.

- It has Hoard in the title
- It has a huge treasure as a reward
- It has a quest style narrative
- It has nonsense creatures: Gibbelings vs Oorn
- The hero dies ironically

This is a very cheap rip off

The Slaying of the Monster was a very clever, symbolic story of the kind I myself like to write. A flash fiction that the reader has to finish in his imagination base on the hint at the end. A whole universe within a few paragraphs.

And thanks for recognise the flaw in your past remark about Lovecraft’s commentary on the issue of the traditional Middle East treatment of women. Sometimes we use to take his racism in a personal level as if he was the one who invented something that is so integrated in the human biology and consciousness that would be necessary to wipe out its whole history to eliminate it.

About the “ceiling out of the reach of human hands”, I think is just literary effect, just a fancy, dramatic way of saying that the ceiling was too high (like a vaulted ceiling). This saves a lot of unnecessary explanation, so the reader can make it out by him/herself.

And very nice podcast, guys! It’s the only kind of review that I’ve found online about this short story. The next one, is the one I’m writing!

The Evil Clergyman, on the other hand, is a pretty cool dream (although it’s no “Thing in the Moonlight”). It would’ve been interesting to see Lovecraft flesh it out — it seems like it could’ve been a story about someone who leaves behind an artifact that has the power to turn other people into him? More crazy brain/soul transference at work…

I got the feeling that it could’ve been genuinely creepy if Lovecraft expanded and fine-tuned the story. Some of the elements (like the mystery box and inter-dimensional black-clad entities) bared vague similarities to “Hellraiser.”

…also, Chris, you’re very lucky to have a father-in-law with a sweet accent like that!

As for old Ephraim, he `s either afraid of the water or he found it hot somehow. Maybe he was curious…

I started reading Lovecraft when I was 13-14, sometime between the 8th and 9th grade. The first story I read was a collaboration, “The Horror in the Museum.” I had gotten turned on to him by the occasional mention by comics creators (e.g., Mike ‘Hellboy’ Mignola).

Then I found this podcast, and listened to basically ALL the available episodes while I was working over one summer, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve become a huge Lovecraft fan, to the point of having a Cthulhu icthys and a Misk. U. sticker on the back of my car.

As for the story… no comments.

And please guys… stop to stick the “racism label” to any remark lovecraft did about anything out of Western White Culture. In the one you quoted, he simple was speaking about facts any anthropologist can corroborate.

For me the awesome part of the story isn’t just that Asenath is really Ephraim, it’s the implication that Ephraim is just another link in the chain leading back . . . to . . . ?

INCEPTION!

(1) Lovecraft, in his more mature less-sexist-but-still-racist mode, and his idea that the subjugation of women was an “Oriental” (read: Islamic/Arab/Semitic) idea corrupting white people… man, how little things have changed in 70 years.

(2) The age difference between Lovecraft and his correspondence buddy, Helen Sully, was 15 years, the same as the age difference between Derby and Asenath. -_- Just sayin’. It might not have been *all* Sonia Greene memories in this fantasy of a middle-aged guy marrying some sexy girl in her twenties, and (drumroll) the horrible consequences therefrom.

As for Fred from Scooby Doo, considering he’s also Megatron, Soundwave and half the Transformers, the gorilla in an X-Files episode, and a Snork or two, he’s most of your childhood recollections.

And Egon was the Brain. As in Pinky and the..

Derby repeatedly mentions that Ephraim’s mind is trapped in a brain that is female and not “fully human”. Despite both of these drawbacks, he’s still capable of some pretty devilish stuff. Imagine what he’d be capable of if both of those handicaps were eliminated…

I still don’t care much for the story. It’s too long-winded (the words-to-story ratio is around 3:1), the Innsmouth connection is misleading and confusing (I keep waiting for the fishy hybrid stuff to come into play, which it never does), and… well, I guess those are my only real complaints about the story. The bad stuff just jumps out at me, and the good stuff doesn’t grab me. Maybe the podcast will change my opinion though.

I’ve had my own bit of body-switching horror while listening just now. Ive come to the jarring realization that, all these years, I’ve been picturing your voices with the wrong faces. Having been a fan since near the beginning, this will take some getting used to.

Also, yeah, it doesn’t matter if HPL drops some clumsy clues about the girl’s powers, cause he has much bigger terrors in store. I think that’s always true with HPL.

HP Podcraft is a great podcast! You’ve hit the right amount of intellectual discussion and easy-going humorous banter to make this truly entertaining.

Furthermore the readings are done to a professional standard with superb voice acting, atmospheric music and effects.

I received the ending of the story much differently from you. The thunderbolt, I imagined, wasn’t lightning at all; it’s the narrator being brained by the cannibal as he stands with his eyes shut against the horror of the dawning realization that he is about to die. The “thunderbolt of thunderbolts”, bringing oblivion, saved his mind—but not his life!

I wonder, though: given all the similarities, maybe Lovecraft was hinting to the more alert reader that Ghatanothoa is Cthulhu, and that petrifying people into living mummies is just one of his powers.

I also wonder about Lovecraft’s ghost-writing clients. Apparently Hazel Heald gave him a one-sentence idea, and sold the story under her name. I just can’t understand how someone could do that and still be able to face the mirror in the mornings. It’s not as if Hazel Heald was a big name, with so many contractual obligations that she had to farm out the work. I guess she was just so in love with the idea of being a writer more than with writing.

Has word been heard? Is there another lovely sea squirming sweety with us now?

One random note about the story: Umr at’Tawil is actually the dullest name, since it literally means just “long life” (or maybe something like “the long-lived one,” if you’re stretching it) in Arabic. I wonder if Cthulhu means “the Big One” in Cthulhuvian.

Anyway, several things I wanna say. One, I loved Carter’s flight through the Solar System. There was so much awesome imagery, like the Monstrosity heaving itself up on one of Saturn’s Moons and such. When He mentioned seeing a secret in Jupiter’s thinning Mists he would not share with anyone to this day, I had a sudden vision of the Red Spot fading for a few seconds to reveal a massive Alien Eye. O_O Also, He mentioned passing another celestial body along with Yuggoth called Kynarth. I couldn’t help but wonder whether it was the supposed Gas Giant “Tyche”, or Yuggoth’s Moon. Also I found what is now My all time favorite quote during My re-reading: “The Man of Truth is beyond Good and Evil.” ^_^

Winged Death is one of those Stories where, rather than impeding it, the fact that Lovecraft worked on it with another Author strengthens it by giving all the right attributes of both Author’s styles. What is so awesome about it is that You actually get scared by a little Fly possesed by an Entomologist! XD It’s a great read.

The All-in-One and the One-in-All (quantum entanglement, inflationary cosmology), the hidden corners of reality (the “smaller dimensions” we can’t perceive), multi-dimensional perception (how something from a “higher” dimension would appear to our limited senses), so much more and it’s all endlessly fascinating!

The Randolph Carter stories are some of my favorites. I guess I like them all though. Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone involved for providing some intellectual stimulation which is so hard to come by these days.

I was also drawing parallels to “The Wicker Man” — the idea of a protagonist (almost) being honourably made a human sacrifice to elder-god; the giant macabre effigies, and furtive glances galore. This one was just loaded with goodies!

First, it’s always fun with the Lovecraft collaborations/ghostwriting to try to figure out what the original writer’s idea was that HPL snatched up and ran for the horizon with. In this case, I’d bet money that Hazel Heald’s Big Scary Idea was something like “a man spends the night in a wax museum.”

Second: George Rogers is apparently a free-lance Mythos Indiana Jones, mounting expeditions all over the world to recover ancient horrors, and he somehow manages all that on the proceeds from a two-bit wax museum! I want to run a roleplaying game about the exploits of George Rogers. He’s got a GOD in the basement!

You mentioned that George Rogers was the ‘Pickman of Wax’ and now that you mention it, this story is almost like a reprise of Pickman’s Model with a similar setup, twist and resolution, only not as well executed.

Nevertheless the story does have its awesome moments, particularly the scene where Stephen Jones is sitting all ‘alone’ in the stifling darkness, when all the while George Rogers is creeping about in his Dimensional Shambler costume. That long passage of time through the night when you think you are all alone or feel completely isolated, but are in fact subject to some hidden danger, reminds me of movies like When a Stranger Calls or the original Black Christmas. As Genus pointed out, Night at the Museum also pulls something similar when all the while you think he’s alone in the museum spoiler in title. It’s hard to describe exactly what I’m getting from this story, but I still like it.

Also I can’t believe Chad passed off the chance to crack a joke about Paul being the Whisperer in Darkness. It sounded like you were thinking about it.

Haha – yeah, I can’t believe it either. I thought it was ridiculous and yet I had such a fun time with it. It was like a Lovecraft funnelcake with cheese on top.

One thing that really stood out, though, was the fact that Orobona KILLED Rhan-Tegoth. THAT was COOL!

I cannot BELIEVE that y’all think this gawd-awful story is good — or as you say, great! Ia! The story is so poorly-written, so absurd and downright stupid, that I was shocked when it was added to ye Centipede Press edition of Lovecraft wherein “The Hound” and “The Unnamable” were dropped. I have long-protested that Grandpa was mocking his own style when he penned “The Hound,” but “The Horror in the Museum” seems sheer parody of his work, worse than any of Derleth’s Mythos wank. Now, by saying that, I don’t say the tale isn’t entertaining and enjoyable. I saw only that it is awful compared to HPL’s serious work, over-the-top with melodramatic touches that enhance the poor quality of the writing. Ugh!

This is the first time I read a story specifically for this podcast and I have to say I echo your thoughts on it. I have never read or even really heard of this story before, and I was really pleasantly surprised by it. It had the elements of The Hound (hipster macabre-hunter) and Pickman’s Model (creepy genius artist) that I love, plus that ever popular Scooby-Doo story line (spend the night in a creepy place!)

Really solid story, and I enjoyed getting your take on it.

It’s lacking the sense of mystery and a larger world that Lovecraft does so well. Instead of alluding to dark, hidden, inhuman forces, we get a detailed account of how and why everything happened. Case closed.

Petty human concerns, like love triangles, rarely factor into Lovecraft’s fiction either.

I suspect that Heald wrote an outline and hired Lovecraft to write it, and while there are Lovecraftian touches, the core of the story is too foreign to the rest of his work. LINO (Lovecraft In Name Only)

I like to imagine HPL sending back manuscripts with just the words “where’s all the f*cking monsters?!” scribbled in red ink in the margins.

Although it isn’t exactly an adaptation of “The Man of Stone” and Lovecraft/Heald is not credited in the show – I think it’s pretty dang obvious that the episode was HEAVILY inspired by this story, and ‘stole’ from it as well. There’s even a character named Henry (the guy who discovered the statues here), water that turns people to stone, and a love triangle (er, square). …It’s on youtube:

I don’t think this could have been made into a movie, or at least not without forcing it into the Hollywood formula.

Just wanted to say that, Chad, you REALLY should impersonate Chris a lot more often.

The only thing which bugged me though was the revelation of Jenkin’s bones. I’d much rather the story end on Jenkin skittering off amongst the rubble. Such a cool and creepy character.

The insights by your special guest Kenneth Hite were thought-provoking.

Einstein’s discoveries about space, time, length, mass, and so many other things that have always been considered “absolute” being relative (to various reference frames) was shocking, and the utter strangeness of quantum mechanics — viewed as chaotic, random, UNKNOWABLE, even ominously indifferent — just plain freaked a lot of people out even more. It still kind of does, really. I can totally see why Lovecraft would have seen the new discoveries in physics as a horror gold mine.

As somebody who studied a lot of math and physics in college, I really loved this story and found the ideas very novel. It also legitimately frightened me and made me lose sleep for fear that I would dream of being crept up on and nuzzled. ^__^

It’s been a while since I read it, but I think it had something to do with cutting down on heating costs in winter by forgoing central heat in favor of heating a small, enclosed space.

The second thing is that when Workmen finally did enter the fallen Witch-House, they found a massive amount of bones belonging to children and infants in varying degrees of disintigration that appeared to have been laying somewhere in the portion of the house which was larger than it should have been. (I believe it was suggesting that the triangular aperture led down to a pit where Keziah threw the remains of Her sacrifices, although I am not sure because I thought the aperture was the triangular hole in the corner of the ceiling of Gilman’s room.)

And now that I think about it, there was one other thing not mentioned. As He made the Jump, He heard Mazurawitz praying loud enough to make out the words “Ia, Shub-Niggurath!”

If Keziah Mason, self-identified Colonial witch, wants to mess around with a Black Book and sacrifice babies, that’s one thing. But for the Thing With A Thousand Faces or the Monstrous Nuclear Chaos to prance around dressed up as a witch-sabbath devil (with cloven hoofs, yet!) seems to make humanity, and this one Miskatonic math nerd in particular, way more important than they should be.

Andrew Leman threw out a small joke about Cthulhu waking up and having coffee and I found it really funny because I had that same thought a few years ago and drew this.

What I really wonder about this story, though, is what Zealia Bishop thought when she gave Lovecraft a one-line suggestion for a Southwestern American ghost story and he gave her a zillion-page “Revolt of the Pedestrians”/”The Sleeper Wakes” style dystopian science fiction story.

And I think those monsters belong in the story. Their presence demonstrates that there are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamed of in Gilman’s (and our, the readers’) philosophy. Being taken to an alien planet who-knows-where in time and space, and seeing these really weird creatures in cahoots with Keziah and Jenkin, just drives home the cosmic scope of the witch’s shenanigans. What looks at first glance to be some fairly Puritanical mythology is revealed to be much bigger and crazier than that. It also, of course, confirms his theories about traveling through space via 4th-dimensional mathematics.

If we ask “why Elder Things,” we could just as easily ask “why not?” Maybe it was his idea of an in-joke. What matters in this scene isn’t which monsters from previous Lovecraft stories reappear and why, but what traveling to an alien planet in his pajamas means to Gilman’s situation.

Lovecraft probably just wanted to sneak in a subtle (at the time, before an entire nerd culture arose around his fiction and its mythology) reference to another one of his stories. He’d need one of his alien races, so they couldn’t be ghouls or Deep Ones, which pretty much leaves him with the Elder Things and the Mi-Go (“Shadow Out of Time” hadn’t been written yet). Maybe he flipped a coin.

Basically this family had some weird things going on around the farm, and then they started hearing voices in the barn claiming to be an “extra extra clever mongoose” with hands and feet that introduced himself as Gef.

I mean at one point he talks himself out of fleeing the house because those marks on his wrist were probably just made by a rat. “It’s fine, I’m just being bitten by rats in my sleep.”

Not a bright lad.

This is one of My faves! The way it describes “Magic” as merely an exploitation of Physical Laws We aren’t aware of yet is excuisite.

This podcast was an awesome find. Sent it to a friend who’s somewhat into Lovecraft (not as much as people like us), he loved it.

Alan Moore, on the other hand, used a “mirror” Alice in the Almanac portion of the second League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. She died sometime later, however, from malnutrition; not only was her physical appearance reversed – so too were her proteins – and all life on earth currently uses proteins that ‘curl’ in one direction (I forget whether it’s clockwise or anti-_; Alice had the opposite, meaning she could gain no nutrition from our non-mirrored food.

The Innsmouth Look

On a further note, I got my mother to read Shadow Over Innsmouth. She liked it, but said every time HPL had written ‘shew’, it reminded her of Ed Sullivan.

Theory A.) Poetry and the Gods is is Miss Croft’s own work and she got HPL to edit it and somehow (perhaps as an advertising gimmick) it was billed as a collaboration.

Theory B.) Poetry and the Gods is entirely Lovecraft’s own work, and he invented a female collaborator as an excuse for a complete departure from his ordinary styles.

If anyone has any evidence to support of tear down my crackpate theories, speak up.

At the end of the tale, the titular tree destroys the building, but we aren’t told, or even given a hint, that the tree harmed Musides in any way, he just disappeared.
When I finished reading, I got the impression that no one, not even Lovecraft nor any beekeeper (no matter how profitable his honey), knew what actually happened. We’re not supposed to know what happened, because no one does.
My guess would be that Kalos, somehow by means of the tree, made it so that he and Musides were in the same place.

P.S. great podcast, I discovered it yesterday and have really enjoyed these first eleven episodes. Even my more literary friends aren’t much for Lovecraft’s brand of oddness, so I’m sort of on my own and it’s nice to hear someone else’s perspective on the stories.
I’m half hoping that at some point you’ll mention something I haven’t yet read, but so far my boast of having read all of H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction at least twice is holding solid.

Regarding the Donovan Loucks interview, now that he’s found the Curwen house, the obvious next step is to find the underworld of unspeakable horror he keeps on the outskirts of town.
