I think Euclid addressed that in his second edition, but the work was lost. Well, except for the Vatican Library copy and another one in Arabic. But I think you've hit upon it, this is what he was hinting at.
Sounds suspiciously like another book that gets frequent discussion on the podcraft...

The Shadow Out of Time? Realy? That's quite a surprise to me, not to say a bit shocking. I was hypnotized by the entire story on my first read-through, and have re-visited that strange, dream-lost city ever since in my dreams. The second part got actually a bit exciting, with his underground exploration, and I was realy shocked at what he found!
And even his "dreamworld" stories have a certain charm to me, their otherworldlyness and removal from common day life makes more then up for their inherit weirdness. altho I absoluteley loath the quest of Iranon. It has no redeeming qualities. Just like the street.
And the horror at red hook. I can get past the.... you know, but the story itself is just so dull. It's as if New York realy was poisoning his mind!

I think he just went along with whatever suited him best. He never would have guessed his stories to be published in books anyway. In puinguin books, no less! Remember he wrote for pulp magazines, and the only ones who would realy notice the retcon would be his friends and maybe a fan or two.

Mythos Matters / Lovecraft Literary Talk / Re: The Shadow Over Innsmouth

It may be the only action-packed* story HPL ever wrote, and for that alone it is interesting, but the way he deals with it is so intense, as if you where realy trying to escape from the hotel, making up an escape plan on the spot. And the twist ending, that has been hinted at since chapter one. Normally Lovecraft's "twists" are clearly visible from space, but this time he knew what he was doing.
And I wish I where a deep one.
