The reading is out, y'all. And Anthony Tedesco pronounces "St. John" correctly!

Who is that a dig on?

The White Power is pretty good

Man, that is one unfortunate typo.  Cheesy

Anyway, I agree about The Great God Pan. I was really disappointed in it. "The White People" blew my freaking mind at the time, but I'm kind of scared to go back and re-read it lest it turn out to be not as good as I remember.

I like the prologue (and I guess the epilogue) of The White People; it is very existentially awesome while the bulk of the Green Book narrative part is rather rambling.

I generally agree. There seems a disconnect between HPL and Machen. The White Powder is pretty good, and I also liked The Black Seal. Still, it gives you some interesting insight into how HLP saw the world of lit.

Supernatural Horror in Literature Podcast

I'm a bit surprised there is not already a thread about this podcast. If there is, I apologize. The only one I found was a query about having a episode on this podcast regarding the work in question and obviously unrelated to this podcast. For those not in the know, this guy (Charly Crawmer) has the great idea to reading the works referenced in the essay of the same name by our favorite writer. As someone who prefers to "read" books via audio, this is a superb way for me to hear many of the influences of H.P.L. and finally get all the references mentioned in the show to all these other apparently awesome writers.

A good reader who gives a short but prudent correlation of the work to the essay and away he goes! A must, methinks, for every listener of this show and every fan of H.P.L.

It depends on how you want the music: live or post. If post, it is an easy "add new layer" to your mix and assign music in designated spots after primary recording. Multiple layers might help if you want sound effects on top or wish to separate the individual tracks. If you want it live, you need an input layer to an audio player. There are various ways of doing this. One is to loop your sound ports back into your sounds port of the computer (warning: this may create feedback or other problems if you do not do it right). This will only work with as many physical ports as your computer has. In my car, my Mac has two .25" out ports, one .25" in port, and a digital (optical) in and out.

It is easier when you have external mixers and/or preamps. as a go between, though all such links will create some delay. Using external devices that utilize USB or Firewire help add to your audio ports, too. Another option, especially when used in tangent with the above, are virtual audio ports. These allow you to make (depending on which software) a multitude of interconnected links between your various audio inputs (both software and physical) with your recording software. This is also good when using Skype or other VoIP programs.

It might also be good to have a "master track" layer where all the separate tracks are mixed into one layer. Sometimes the individual layers will work or sound best but on occasion, this fully integrated track, which limits your ability to make individual changes to a given input layer, is better and saved my butt a couple time.

You recording software and and external preamps or mixers will take as many inputs as it can find. However, with more links between the original source and the recording software (not to mention your own monitoring headphones, replay is inevitable. It is best to minimize the connections, and depending on where you want to get your monitoring output, there may be some between what you hear and what is recorded. The best way to make sure things are right, if you are not monitoring off the feed that the software is recording (and then again, it is a good idea anyway), is to make test recording beforehand to be sure that you are happy with the final product and things are leveled and recorded as they should be.

It is also good to find the amount of delay you are conferrable with and adjust yourself to it (for it will through you off otherwise).

A neat point, old book.  The internet is unmatched in its capacity for facilitating collaborative writing.

...

I just hope, if HPL somehow existed to-day, that he'd never find online roleplaying....

He would be the most hated DM ever... if the fate of many o this characters says anything. Tongue

The main thing that makes a collaboration - H.P. got PAID.
Wink

There was some doubt over that with previous collaborations, if memory is correct.

Along the lines of this thread, but in a different direction:

What would Lovecraft think of this podcast, and the revival of fandom about his works. Would he be happy that people appreciate his works? Would he be miffed that he was long dead before this happened? Would he think us all silly considering his self-critics? Just wondering...

Theosophy = what crazy people had before Scientology.

Makes me wonder what Lovecraft would have made of Scientology and how he might incorporate it into "his mythos". ...or maybe Scientology is just the new public face of a certain ancient cult that will never die. O_O
