31  Mythos Matters / Lovecraft Literary Talk / Re: Looking for Lovecraft Audio on: September 19, 2011, 04:21:42 PM
I like Roddy McDowall's reading of "The Outsider". Smiley

Edit: I just finished listening to your reading of it, Julie. I like the ending. The whimper in your voice was a nice touch. After reading the thread about female incarnations of Lovecraft characters, I thought of that ending in a different way that previously when I heard it. I thought of it in terms of lost beauty (I.E. a once beautiful woman now seeing herself as a corpse and sobbing at the sight). Maybe that's a female stereotype in my head, but that's what I thought.

For those interested, here are the two episodes of "Night Gallery" mentioned earlier (via Hulu.com):

Pickman's Model

After all, you can chop the head off of a male monster with no real qualms, but chopping off a woman's head, well that is a different thing, even if they are undead.

Bob

Oh, I don't know. When something is trying to eat one's brains one soon finds that gender plays little role anymore. That said, I don't think "The Outsider" seemed to be a bad person (male or female) or a monster in the evil sense of the word.  He/She was just undead.

I figured out why no one much learns a New England accent just for the heck of it - it's just not sexy.
Not much use for picking up girls, even if you offer Peppridge Fahms cookies.
LOL

I beg to differ. My last girlfriend (who lives in California and I lived with out there for a bit) loved my voice (though it was the deepness more so, I think). Another friend years ago (from West Virginia) was enamored with the Boston accent of her boyfriend.

Oh, no!  "Killer crab versus Shoggoth" - I have a dread premonition of the next syfy channel movie!!!!!

Complete with Eldritch-Cam as a gimmick.

In 5-D with non-euclidian camera angles?

Yes, but you need special glasses for your soul. Glasses that can't be grasped by our feeble minds.

How punitive.

Love it!
40  Mythos Matters / Lovecraft Literary Talk / Re: Adjective Wars: Lovecraftian v. Mythos on: September 14, 2011, 04:46:31 AM
When I think "Lovecraftian" I think of something that has the feel of a Lovecraft story, but not necessarily fitting into the mythos.

When I think "Mythos" (in terms of Lovecraft) I think of something that fits into the universe that Lovecraft created; something that is obviously meant to be a part of that world.

Do you think there's a sea urchin out there somewhere yelling "Look!  The emperor has no shell!"

Very cool, though!!

Similar to the night I spent courting a certain young lady in high school. Only it wasn't birds but crustaceans, and I wasn't so much pelted as deluged. We have strange courting rituals in south Louisiana. Undecided

Bob

Was this a young fish-lady?

I only signed the first two oaths...

Sell see, there's your problem. The more initiated (read: completely bat-shit insane) members of the cult have signed ANOTHER oath, one which you neophytes are not told of. Oh, wait, i think I just told you about the oath. Um... just disregard what I wrote above and continue breeding with the fish-girls...

Bob, totally not a high cultist

Yes, Mike, continue breeding with the fish-girls.

As for you, Bob... I need to have a word with you at the next meeting. Seems a certain someone left a certain gate open.

I have the New England accent as my natural speech pattern. I don't desire to be aged overnight though. 31 is old enough.
