4  General Category / Episode Discussion / Re: Episode 118 - Lovecraft's last days and legacy on: July 08, 2012, 09:43:59 PM
I have listened to nearly every episode of the show (since Dagon at least) the moment it downloaded from itunes.

I put off listening to this show for two days.

I listened to it, with a lot of melancholy in my heart.

It's been a long strange road through the work of Lovecraft, with Chad and Chris.

I look forward to future projects from this duo. They are talented, knowledgeable, and funny as hell.

So long, and thanks for all the horror stories about fish.

As part of our Countdown to Halloween I'm going to be making a list of the 100 best horror films of all time, as voted on by my followers.

I have the 100 finalists and you can start voting for them on our Facebook page now through July 18th. Starting July 20th we will be putting out 1 "mini-podcast" out every day as we countdown to Halloween and the Greatest Horror Film Of All Time! Yep, 100 days, 100 podcasts. At the end of this I will probably look like I drank from the wrong cup in The Last Crusade.

If anyone is interested, I will be looking for guest co-hosts for this fools errand. Each episode will be roughly 15-30 minutes long, and newcomers to podcasting are welcome, we will record 3 or 4 at a time roughly twice a week. I am always available and I will work around your schedule. Contact me at kesinpa@gmail.com

And you can go here to vote on the finalists-

6  Mythos Matters / Cthulhu Entertainment & Gaming / Horror Etc Podcast does a Lovecraft Episode on: June 14, 2012, 11:06:34 AM
Don't know if anyone else here listens to them, but the awesome Horror Etc Podcast just celebrated 250 episodes with a Lovecraft special.

Check it out-

“The oldest and strongest emotion in man is fear,
and the oldest and strongest form of fear is of the unknown”

H.P. Lovecraft may be considered one of the most important and influential American authors the genre has ever seen. A bold statement but it happens to be one we stand behind and because of that, we could think of no better subject to cover for our milestone episode 250.

To properly discuss his works and their subsequent impact we brought in a Lovecraft specialist and listener to the podcast as a guest host. We did encounter post recording audio issues and as such we ask for understanding as the fidelity is lower than usual. The conversation though was a great one as we explored the man himself, the influences of the era he was active on his writing, the concept of ‘cosmic horror’, what the Cthulhu mythos is all about, and of course we take a look at many selected key stories including The Dunwich Horror, Herbert West: Reanimator, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness and many more.

What would a HP Lovecraft show be without also looking at the multitude of film adaptations and discussing why they struggle to capture the essence of Lovecraft’s written word. We also take a look at a roster of key genre films that owe a huge debt to Lovecraft where that influence that may not always be recognized.

We hope you enjoy this spotlight on Lovecraft and encourage all to try out some original stories as the only true way to understand the mind shattering enormity of cosmic horror is to experience it (and huge thanks to our special guest for joining us).

Donna Summer, Ray Bradbury, did you guys get the equipment you are recording on by robbing the grave of a warlock?

Oh! And could you please bring up Lars Ulrich in the next episode?

Any-hoo, another awesome episode guys. This is another story I read during my first wave (no pun intended) of Lovecraft obsession but did not leave much of a impression on me. Now looking at it, it's nothing short of a masterpiece. Little plot, mostly mood, and the stories you make up in your mind about whats going on makes it more interesting then any explanation the story could give you.

Awesome.

Oh please; however meh this movie was it would NEVER make me want to watch AVPR again. Ever. As preqels go this could have been worse. I think it outperforms every one of the Star Wars prequels, for instance.

Admittedly, an exaggeration. But I'm still mad.

Just by looking at how much he enjoyed writing letters to friends and sharing feedback about his own and other peoples writing I think he would dig it.
11  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Prometheus on: June 10, 2012, 12:37:32 PM
My spoiler free review-

"Prometheus"
Studio- 20th Century Fox
Director- Ridley Scott
Writer- Damon Lindelof, Jon Spaihts
Starring- Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Guy Pearce, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Benedict Wong, Emun Elliott, Patrick Wilson, Ian Whyte

We all had high hopes for this one. Much like we had for the Thing prequel that came out last year. However with this one, director of the original Alien, Ridley Scott, was at the helm.

When it came to The Thing prequel, most regarded it as mediocre. Not the worst flick. But not nearly up to par with John Carpenter's 1983 film.

Like The Thing, Alien is an iconic film. It's even regarded by mainstream film critics as one of the best films ever made. And like most hit horror films it spawned sequels. Some good. Some wretched.

2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, killed the franchise. It is a film that is on par with Batman And Robin. A true contender for "the worst film ever made" title.

So like so many other film franchises, Hollywood thought it was time for a remake/reboot in the form of the prequel Prometheus.

But hey! We have Ridley Scott on this prequel! No way could it suck right?

Wrong.

If you can divorce yourself from all the previous films, it's mediocre, at best.

It is not nearly as smart as it wants to be.

Compared to the previous films, it's garbage. You will long for a four hour director's cut of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.

A "meh" film made worse by the fact that because of it we will never see "At The Mountains Of Madness" on the big screen.

Go see Battleship. At least you will go into it knowing it will suck.

One out of five stars.

And now the whole thing is being covered up! There's nothing there when I click on that link. The Order of Dagon has gone too far!!!

Whoops!

Sorry, now fixed.

Please excuse me. I was trying to get Fox News on the phone when I posted that.
15  General Category / General Discussion / Occupy Arkham Protest Ends In Tragedy For Miskatonic University Students. on: January 03, 2012, 09:46:22 AM
From http://cthutube.blogspot.com/2012/01/occupy-arkham-protest-ends-in-tragedy.html

Tragedy struck the sleepy town of Arkham Massachusetts today leaving dozens of Miskatonic University Students in St Mary's Hospital and more missing.

The protest had started over the building of the new Marsh Gold Refinery which is to be built on the corner of Pickman Street and Parsonage Street where the historic "witch house" now stands.

The protest had been going peacefully until yesterday when guards from nearby Innsmouth Security were bussed in to break up the protesters.

Stay tuned for more details.
