Back to Dunwich - Episode 3 begins some slight departure from the original story - sort of.  While I name characters who were unnamed in the original story, I don't actually add any.  And Zebulon became Old Widdah Zebulon during the casting process.  But those scary old wise women are universal...

Hope you're all still listening!

I listened to precisely 11:03, and then I fainted. Random personal thoughts follow in no certain order:

Damn, it sounds like Coleman's version on Suspense! in 1945, and here I was hoping to make sense of those phrases in that version through the agency of Julie H. Blame yeself, old booke, ye told her to listen to the Suspense! version... What's all this added widda Zebulon stuff? I don't know... Did I hear this before somewhere? Did Julie H make up all this stuff in dialect and read it? Nocturne does that a lot, remember that one Lovecraft thing they did, olde booky? What was that called now... No matter. She must've. But it's following Coleman's somehow. Where does reality end and fantasy begin? I am so confused. Wait! That MUST be Julie H's injection there, brilliant. How long does this thing run? That's weird, it says 33:10 in the media player. 33. And 10 is one-sixth of a minute. This is numerologically significant. I don't know what the hell it means, though. I wonder if they did that on purpose too. 33:10 divided by 3 is about 11:03 with one second left over. Looky there, it's coming up on 11:03 right now. I guess I better--

Followed by blackness.

LOL - ok.  I'm sure I've heard Ronald Coleman's at some point in the distant past, but not making any attempt to emulate it.
Can't recall it making much of an impression on me.

Zebulon Whateley is named in the original story as being "of a branch that hovered halfway between decayed and undecayed" and "whose memories of hill ceremonies were not entirely connected with old Wizard Whateley" (quoting from memory - so probably not quite exact).

I wrote this role in as plain old "Zebulon", but in rehearsal, the only actor who suited the lines was Rhys, and so I swapped the gender to fit her and changed it to "Widow Zebulon".  Luckily that change happened early enough that the once or twice Z is mentioned in conversation could be adjusted as well.

Hope you get over the fainting soon!  That can take a toll on your carpet.

Why is it that all of your voice actresses sound like they are under age? That gets a bit creepy sometimes.

Particularly weird, since most of us aren't.  The closest is Beverly, and she's old enough to drink.
I guess we could take it as a compliment.... but probably not.  Most of us are closer to 40 than 30 (and I'm not saying which SIDE of 40).

JulieH: Orlyeh? Maybe your farflung voice actors and actresses dialed up the old Suspense! episode, Huh Some of the lines are a little too close for coincidence. Check it out when you get a chance, it's Suspense from late 1945 (November?) called Dunwich Horror, on archive.org under Audio>Radio>OTR> somewhere.

Also, I don't have carpets, just fake hardwood floors, so it's not a problem. I managed to listen to 2/3 of the way through now. It's brilliant and fun.

A lot of the lines are so very "Lovecraft-y" that I don't think there's any other way to say them.

Well once you start down the road of changing the lines, you start changing the story, and too much of THAT leads to abortions like Sci-Fi's "Dresden Files". So please, keep as much of the original in it as you can JulieH.

Yowtch - too true.

And while I have emphasized different portions of the story that were minimal (or very nearly invisible) in the original text, and moved a few events around - and added personalities to all the characters (sigh, can't help it), the underlying backbone is still there....

Which is how yo make a good adaptation. At least that is how you do it in my mind. Just do me a favor: don't replace the bug-sprayer at the end of DH with a hockey stick. Ok? Undecided
