AMONG WRITERS in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe, few have achieved the heights of the macabre reached by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Unique in the field, Lovecraft is the one American author of our time whose work challenges comparison with the best in the field from England--that of Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood and M. R. James. His creation of the utterly unique mythology of Cthulhu was a brilliantly conceived departure from the conventional in supernatural fiction. Many of his stories--notably "The Rats in the Walls," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Music of Eric Zann," and "The Thing on the Doorstep"--have become staple fare for anthologies in the genre.
H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was a New England writer, the majority of whose supernatural stories appeared in
Weird Tales magazine from 1926 to 1937. He was the author of

Beyond the Wall of Sleep, two omnibus collections both now out of print, of
Marginalia, and, in collaboration with August Derleth, a novel,
The Lurker at the Threshold.
