They're an excellent set of books. My wife and I have read them all to date.
There's an interview with Charlie Stross in Yog Radio #36 about the series IIRC.

I know he's just been robbed, but somehow, that quote sounds like a great ending to one of his stories, "The Disintegration of The Blue Suit into a Devilish Mess!".

My uncle lent them to me but for some reason I haven't been able to start the second. Some kind of mental momentum thing. Maybe because I liked the first but wasn't gripped?

Yeah I know that feeling. That's what it was like trying to read the thrid book of the "Ender" series. #1 was really good, but #2 was good, but not great, even though it had some really interesting ideas and concepts. When it came time to read #3, I just never got around to it. Hell, I probably never will.

Of the three so far the second one is considered the weakest. But I still enjoyed it. It relies much more on the Bond aspect of the series, which in itself is kind of cool, but still has Mythos elements in it. The third one gets back into it.

They're odd sorta books for me. I wish I had written them, but I don't like to read them. Feel the same about the Dresden Files. |

I tore through the first 3 books and love them, but I started with the Jennifer Morgue, which I felt was the easiest book to start with. I may have to re-read. My former high school literature teacher lent me the "Rook" by Daniel O'Malley (which helped my fix since the next Atrocity Archives book won't be out until July). Although it doesn't take place in the Lovecraft universe, there are definitely some Lovecraftian overtones. And there are some really interesting bad guys, the Gestalt siblings come to mind.

Wait! What!!?? A new Bob Howard story coming out? I can't wait Yep, July 3rd. The Apocalypse Codex. I have it pre-ordered for the kindle. Picked up the "President's Vampire" by Christopher Farnsworth with few expectations today and was totally blown away on page 82 as there is a flashback chapter for Innsmouth, Massachusetts 1928. Not as good as the Atrocity Archives as Farnsworth's characters aren't as well drawn as Stross' but I am enjoying it. |
