I can't believe this topic doesn't yet exist. I could have sworn it did....perhaps in the old forums. Tax season is coming to the Americas, and that means I'm going to get more tattoos with my return! I've got plans for a fancy-ish eldersign (Lovecraft's design), and I'm considering a tentacled/amorphous/glowing-orb/something. I'll need to discuss it with my artist since she's doing all of the legwork. I'll be sure to post pictures once they're finished, but I'd love to see any Lovecraft inspired tattoos you guys might have, or have found on the Internet, or your friends', or what have you. And to further feed my unending Lovecraft/Mieville man-crush, here's a picture of China Mieville with his new tat. This guy is a university professor.

Score!
Eventually I'd like to get a Lovecraft tat on one arm and a Tolkien tat on the other. I can't decide on a design for either, though. I haven't read a Lovecraft story that features the Elder Sign, so I don't really want to use that, and that's about it as far as simple, iconic Lovecraftian images. A Cthulhu tat would just look like a fucked-up octopus.

A Cthulhu tat would just look like a fucked-up octopus. I agree to a point. I've seen quite a few Cthulhu tattoos and I wasn't often impressed. I'm not sure I'd be keen on a straight Cthulhu tattoo myself. I'm more partial to hinting at less corporeal concepts in the literature. I do want something with tentacles, though perhaps not what you would classically see in a tattoo. What I'd really love is to somehow convey the Colour in tattoo form....that would take some brainstorming.

I've kind of wanted an EOD tat as at least roughly suggested by HPLHS's EOD emblem. It's nice, symmetrical, and I dig the overall color pattern. It wouldn't be a huge or extreme tattoo, but since the Esoteric Order of Dagon is probably my most used HPL reference, it would fit my overall fandom.

Oooo.....that would be cool. Maybe three or four inches long just below the base of the neck . . . I may have to get that one too. Anyhow, my appointment is on the 29th! And Genus, here's a Cthulhu I'd probably be willing to get. You know, sans clock hands.

Kaelestes: I'm guessing that's a Zazzle design? Hmm, I may need a new clock...

I've been planning to get a pair of 3/4 sleeves (almost full arm tattoos) for a while. The plan is to have my right arm be rough chronology of Dante Alighieri's Inferno using select plates from Gustave Dore's Divine Comedy series of etchings. begining at my shoulder and spiraling downward the images would be accompanied by excerpt of the text in it's original Italian.
My left arm will be devoted to Lovecraftian themes and is not as definitively planned out. On my shoulder I want to have an interpretation of Azathoth as the "three-lobed burning eye" surrounded by stars and two flute-players on the front and back of the upper arm. I've always loved Azathoth as the center of HP's symbolic pantheon of existential horror. Besides that, my rough plan was to have the rest of the arm dotted with various symbol and quotes such as his Elder Sign, the Ascending/Descending Node, "...and with strange aeons even death may die". I also want a couple non-lovecraftian things on the arm as well (yet still on theme with Existential Art/Liturature) such as "Et in Arcadia Ego" the title of two paintings by Nicolas Poussin meaning "Even in Arcadia I (am)", Tolkien's "Not all those who wander are lost" and a clever little mash-up of Lovecraft and Carl Sagan in "We live on a placid island of ignorance..." "...on the shores of the cosmic ocean".

I'd personally go with something Hellboyish, incorporating something tentaclish/ Ogdru Jahadish/ Sadu Hemish, as I'm such a Mignola and Hellboy biatch.

Hey, it's better than having the Salrac Pit. Can anyone say "giant space vagina"? I knew that you could.

Very nice, MartinRonnlund!
I think I would probably also get an Elder Sign if I were to get any kind of Lovecraftian tat, although a much smaller one (what can I say? I like dainty). One of my favorite moments at the National Book Festival was meeting up with another Lovecraftian librarian and seeing his very similar Elder Sign tattoo.
Also, I kind of admire the Vagina!Cthulhu because it has claws/mouth/other features that keep it from being the same old fucking octopus (love cephalopods, but hate seeing them being automatically Cthulhu. That is one fine Cthulhu.)
