I've seen things you wouldn't imagine

I've listened to all the podcasts, almost all at work.  I love the format and attitude, it keeps me awake and sharp at a deskbound job, but I have to stay with fresh material.

I've listened to lots of Julie's 19 Nocturne Boulevard, but I have to pay too close attention and it's a bit too quiet unless I blow my ears off (earbud).  I think the stories there aren't talking TO ME, they have a life of their own.  I feel a little like someone listening in on a conversation they can't quite hear and they keep saying, "What'd he say?"

I listened to Julie's blog, which is very informative, but I like the back and forth of a couple of people.

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm down on Julie's stuff.  I'm not, it is FANTASTIC and her productivity is unbelievable, not to mention the production value.  Please go there if you haven't.  What I am saying about it is that it isn't right for my current listening needs.

I've listened to a lot of Down in Front, which I like a lot, but I've pretty much gone through all the movies that I care about.

What do I do now?

Well, there's always The Double Shadow (Cthulhuchick & Friends' Clark Ashton Smith podcast) and A Podcast to the Curious, which is like the HPPodcraft but with two English guys named Will & Mike instead of Chris & Chad, and they talk about M.R. James instead of H.P. Lovecraft.

Perhaps a general "other podcasts" thread is in order...

No worries - drama is drama.

I love listening to horror movie review podcasts, like Mail Order Zombie or Horror Etc. (because they are interesting and erudite discussions), Scream Queenz (because Patrick is hilarious and very opinionated), or Krueger nation, Drunken Zombie, or the Splattercast because they're often drunk and mildly offensive.

You might also give a listen to something like Podcast Squared, which is a podcast that reviews all kinds of other podcasts - since that would then give you some more ideas.  I heard of Dork Forest (a stand-up comedienne interviewing people about their dorky hobbies) there, and it's hugely fun.  Totally not plugging it just because she plans to interview me when she comes up to Seattle late this fall....

I recently started listening to Drabblecast, which is all kinds of strange short fiction. Some might be called weird/horror, some is more sci-fi-y but it's worth a shot. Lots in their archives.

Thanks for the recommend, Genus! Smiley

So far Podcast to the Curious is spot on.  Although I had no idea who M.R. James was and no previous interest in his stories, those two guys are Chris and Chad with a British accent.  Their podcast seems to be modeled very closely after this one (I'm assuming they did this conciously).  I've listened to about half their first post and it seems like they will be able to keep me occupied and awake for a while.

Julie,  I'm going to look for those movie commentary / review podcasts.  Maybe they'll have some of the movies I've missed.

Thanks.

IP, I'm very jealous of you as you will be able to enjoy MR James, now, with the eye of an adult!!  If you delve into his stories they'll open up an new world of fiction for you.  They are tamer than HPL, but all good fun.  And if you need work listening, I think the bulk of them are on Librivox.

I second The Drabblecast! I have been a listener for some time now and I have to say that next to the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast, they are my favorite thing to listen to. With over 240 episodes in the bank that makes for a lot of weird fiction. And, Norm Sherman, the host of The Drabblecast, declares every August "Lovecraft Month". A month filled with stories commissioned by The Drabblecast that take on Lovecraftian themes. Good stuff!

I listened to Drabblecast and it sounds remarkably like Escapepod.  The Escapepod people have a horror podcast called Psuedopod, but I can't seem to get it to work on my computer.

I found one on Julie's link list that I'm listening to now, Second Shift.

I know, it's not anything like I described I wanted, but it passes the time.

Also in the Escapepod gang you can find Podcastle, its a fantasy extension of the three.

Ah, I've dropped Second Shift, through no fault of their own.  I saw The Avengers Friday night and now I'm on a hero kick.  I'm just whimsical that way.  I found something called Timid Pirate and they have a Cobalt City podcast.

Off the superhero kick now. I finished the Cobalt City stuff and I just got back from Boston.  I'm back on horror and Lovecraft now.

I realized that writing horror could be a tonic for bad times.  I have tried writing fun stuff when I'm down as a sort of escape, but horror is easier.

I'll probably end up listening to music mostly this coming week.

Have you thought of DL'ing the entirety of some old radios shows like X Minus One, or Dimension X? With typical run times of between 22 and 28 minutes, it takes quite a while to get through, and is an enjoyable journey as you go.

I do listen to OTR, but my favorite way to do that is to listen to Those Were the Days on Saturday afternoons.  It's a radio program from the Chicago area, but you can listen on-line.  There is something about having to catch it when it is actually being broadcast that makes it better for me.  Is that weird?

I've thought about listening to old serials like that though (Flash Gordon specifically).

Hey, just because we're wrapping up Lovecraft doesn't mean Fifer and I are going away. In fact, we're planning on expanding. More content!

3 more weeks until we explain.

Stay tuned!

Translation: We're going to spend three episodes doing Haunter, and at the end of the third installment we're going to announce the next upcoming episode dealing with the Supernatural essay, and some hints of where we're going after that (CAS, REH, RB, HK et al.). No, we're still not going to do Lurker at the Threshold or the Derleth pastiches, and we're not going to do Quebec, but we have some ideas for other things that might be fun.

amirite?
