The symbol of the torch alternately burning and consuming itself is also quite commonly read in alchemical texts as the symbol for the use of the retort or some other distillation process.  A really well-done symbol in terms of esoteric meaning, is going to have MULTIPLE meanings - both in terms of its "practical" symbolism and its alternate, "spiritual" symbolism.  A good symbol is an extended metaphor.  Most people who make up symbols (I'm looking at you Dan Brown) for the purpose of literary creation, don't really understand that.
