Finally finished it.  Man it has a plodding start.  It's like a trip to evil-geneology.com or something.  It gets really good towards the end, and actually has a bit of mystery to it.  I think HPL knows he "tips his hand" and plays with it by the end this time around.

The "essental salts" was one of my favorite things, wish I knew the origins of the quote.

Yeah, I agree the beginning is like reading text written by Cotton Mather. If you can make it through, you will be rewarded in your efforts.

It's from "Pietas in Patriam," the appendix to Book II of Magnalia Christi Americana by Cotton Mather. Mather attributes the passage to "the Incomparable Borellus," i.e., the French physician Pierre Borel (1620 - 1689).

Also of note - the final showdown almost seems a symbolic confrontation of "Britannica-Speak" magick vs "Mythos-Speak" F'taghn'ing.  Like, "From here on out, it's all gibberish, 'cause every time I mention Metatron people are going to think of Alan Rickman in a Kevin Smith movie!".

The Annotated Case of Charles Dexter Ward has been published in pb by Tampa University Press, and it will be publish'd in a hardcover edition next month.  Editor S. T. Joshi has included a lengthy Introduction, an Afterward and numerous annotations, and the book will be illustrated by photos of Lovecraft's Providence as it is presented in the novel.  S. T. says the book has been especially design'd to look like an antique volume.  This is my favourite work by HPL and I am delirious to see it.  My copy of ye pb is on its way, & I itch to review over at Amazon!
