So, what's everyone's favorite Lovecraftian soundtrack?  Personal favorite is the music to 'Dagon'.  Creepy, with random chanting of 'Ia Ia Cthulhu Fhtagn'.

Bohren und der Club of Gore. I'll put up a link when I get to a computer, but it's just dark, eerie ambient music mixed with slow jazz saxophone to give it a slight 1920s feel.

EDIT:

"Constant Fear"

"Midnight Black Earth"

"On Demon Wings"

I would love to find the music from "Dagon". I love that theme! Anyone know where to find an MP3 or something? The soundtrack to "From Beyond" is also nice, and easily obtainable.

Trent Reznor's soundtrack to Quake is a beaut.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gVOZnNRcJM is a good example.

Also, Schloss Tegal's quieter stuff, and most of the stuff Bestia Centauri put out is suitably bleak.

If you have the stomach for some harsher noise, Vedisni's Architects and Murderers is a fantastic record, as is most of Gnaw their Tongues' material.

I dunno, I always associate Lovecraftian music with isolation and otherness. Either dense and unpalatable or epic and open, or both. One thing is certain though, it can't be pleasant listening.

A little freaky death metal, quietly in the background.

I love Darkest of the Hillside Thickets' album "The Shadow out of Tim".
Lovely concept album / reworking of the story "The Shadow out of Time", with some really great songs.

Agreed, Shadow Out of Tim is a fun take on the Yith stories, that just happens to be set to music.

No beasties are mentioned by name, but look me in the eye and tell me this song isn't about Cthulhu.

High On Fire - "Death Is This Communion"

Quote
The site of lost horizons
The minions seek to resurrect a God

The graves hold arcane mysteries
Vaporous swamps hide terrible catacombs

The circle of redeemers
The pact is made with human sacrifice
Under storm filled skies
Behemoth of the sea awakes... Arise!

Tremble at the horror in which it writhes!
Once they unearth and behold the Titan's might!
Faithful servants pay its ghastly price!
Slithering, blasphemous, curse upon all life!

Now you realize
Death is this communion!

Re-animating again
For some strange reason a considerable part of this is in the heavy metal genre.

The Vision Bleak are a German Goth band using a lot of classic  horror references such as Poe, Byron and Lovecraft. Namely in the Black Pharaoh Trilogy and what else - Kutulu!

I find them quite enjoyable and of course that voice makes me jealous...

Is this the right thread to post a mix? I recently made a 70-minute Lovecraft-inspired mix - none of the music is by me, I should stress, but I'm quite pleased with some of the mixing and the general tone of the thing. It's pretty eclectic; there's ambient weirdness of various sorts, a fair amount of industrial, some folk, metal, dubstep, techno...all of it, I hope, evocative of dreaming cosmic vistas or latent with a nameless, creeping horror. Smiley

Anyway, here it is, available for streaming or download: http://soundcloud.com/oliver-harris/andwithstrangeaeons-pt1 - enjoy!

(The astute among you will notice it's called 'pt1' - pt2 coming soon, hopefully...)

I have a Pandora station I call Jazz Noir that I've really nursed by adding different artists and styles to.  For some reason, Lovecraft speaks to me in a kind of creepy, bluesy jazz.

Here's an example of what I think of, from Youtube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyEV0OHlgaE
