Quick search for "Pickman" or the like on DeviantArt should yield some results as well.

Lovecraft mentions Anthony Angarola in Pickman's model as well. He's definitely worth a look; search out the Ben Hecht book
Kingdom of Evil
for some great, dare I say Lovecraftian, illustration work by Angarola (not to mention being an excellent Weird book itself). Lovecraft mentions him in Call of Cthulhu as well. Interesting to note that Angarola was also a new Italian immigrant; does the fact that he merits H. P.'s repeated praise in writing demonstrate that fellow artists are exempted from race hatred? An aristocracy of the soul perhaps...
Just found this quote from a Lovecraft letter:
“Sorry to hear that Angarola is dead. He almost illustrated my ‘Outsider’—that is, he read it & told Wright he’d like to illustrate it just after the present illustration had been made & purchased!” (to Richard Ely Morse, 28 July 1932)

Shell-Shock may have played a role in this, too (using the archaic term for PTSD). After surviving the great War, Pickman's grotesque, but realistic art may have stirred something familiar in Thurber. That could explain his initial fascination, and final revulsion. It brought him somewhere familiar.
