Perhaps the bluish clay washed up from the reef was a "tame" shuggoth. The artist's will and overpowering vision of love and beauty shaped it into his ideal companion. An alien pygmalion.

There might be a market for this. Shuggoth lovebots from Innsmouth. To hell with the gold refinery.
