So I kind of dropped Poe after over saturation in my teens and made the switch to Lovecraft and hearing this title didn't immediately bring me back, so I thought of The Shadow Out of Time. Maybe not thematicthematically related, but could the Shadow in Poe's piece also be tied more to time than death?

Reading the signs (Greek, Egyptian and some semi-buried Biblical) not only mean that death is coming but literally the End of Times. He opens not only with his own death but the fact that it will be centuries later, which I think is also a way of saying the era in which he lived will be so far removed from the reader that he will be a study in archeology; looking at the reflections might be a metaphor for looking at the inaccurate caricatures of themselves. There are a lot of suggestions of death that could also be argued as time.

By the way, Ptolemaius was abandoned in the seventh century, years before this supposedly took place. Also, the narrator's name could mean either wine, or the metaphorical 'fiery wine of God's wrath. Do what you will with that.

What else could the shadow be?

Dr. Zee in The Return of Starbuck is the only part of this episode that can go bye-bye.  What a crappy character he is.
