Silmarillion not a single book, it is really is a collection of "books" in one book. That confuses people.
This is very true. If one approached it as a collection of short-stories, one might do better. A cycle, perhaps. Also, I have been able to go back & read individual stories. I'm fond of Blind Guardian's "Nightfall in Middle Earth," which is based on the Silmarillion and when I first listened to it I had to look up references. Yes, because the way the stories are written are very different. When reading them as "a whole" it makes a very confused read with lots and lots of namedropping, namechanging etc etc. I see it as written pieces from long ago by different authors compiled into one book. Like the Bible.

I'm reading 'The Strain' by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. So far it's a real page turner and the dread builds up nicely.

I found a really great site through Reddit the other day. It links to DagonBytes for Lovecraft and Poe, but has a TON of .pdfs to download. Basically it's got every classic of western horror you could ever want to read. Check it out. You'll keep yourself busy for a while! http://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/horror_classics.htmThanks for the link. This is a huge collection! I am currently reading Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely and Hiram Grange & the Twelve Little Hitlers by Scott Christian Carr. Uh-oh... now I see there are more two more books available. Dang. I have to buy them.

George R.R. Martin is a sadist. ...just my two cents on that series. But I will read the 2nd & 3rd if he writes a conclusion. Otherwise I'm not going to put myself through the pain for naught.

Went out yesterday on lunch break and got three volumes of REH's Conan the Cimmerian stories. I desperately need a new writer over whom to obsessively "nerd out," and I think REH is the man for the job.
Anyone know where I can find some of his Western and boxing stories?

That is a great book! I love that book. It was my choice when we did a display of favorite books, here at the library.

I've been trying to get though The Conquest of Bread by anarchist-communist Peter Kropotkin, but being written in 1892 it's pretty dense and filled with economic-isms that don't really apply to modern society as much as it could be.
Also just got De Profundis: Cthulhu gaming at the edge of madness. I hope I can use it as a way to get my friends interested in the works of HP Lovecraft.
