I came across a picture of Lovecraft...smiling. Something I had never seen before.
Looks a little...scary...like he just cut some backroom deal with the Great Old ones
and came out on top.  Shocked

I'm amazed that those facial muscles hadn't atrophied. He wasn't quite the antisocial recluse we paint him to be, but I wonder how often he actually smiled in real life.

This seems to be the full picture; any idea who the other man is?

Looks a bit like Harry Caray, or rather, Will Ferrell as Harry Caray.

He looks more like he's swilling acid around in his mouth to me.

Well if you notice, you can't see the other guy's hand, so who knows what's going on there...

If memory serves, it's Howard and Donald Wandrei on the steps of Frank Belknap Long's browstone in Brooklyn.

Of course, I know he loved cats.  I showed the photo to somebody and they said it looked as though he was throttling it as well!  The fact that he seems barely able to crack a smile probably adds to the effect.

I think he's just making sure you can see the cat's face.  Cats aren't exactly the most cooperative animals.

He also appears to be outside, and if that kitty's a personal indoor pet then a deathgrip to the throat is exactly what he should have on it.
