I keep returning to this episode as one of my favorites.
I think it's the just one of those great "at sea" adventure stories.  The music is great and taken from the perspective of the "bad guys".
Madness, U-boats, underwater temples, submergence and the sound of waves during narration... greatness.

I'm with you Carlo, this is also one of my favorites as well. The stereotype of the "Iron Prussian" is priceless. I love quirky (and psychopathic) protagonists.

I think that it's also a nice introduction to HPLs work. It's short, but it's not a fragment. It's supernatural, but he doesnt bludgeon you with crazy names.
Definitly one of my favourite stories.

I dunno, there's just something about it.  Also the music used for this episode exploits the haunting, eerie sound of some sort of underwater exploration and calling to mind cold depths.
I do some scuba diving and there's a fantastic wreck of a Nazi U-boat at an acceptable depth (about 113 ft).  The U-352.
If you are a qualified wreck diver you can go inside with your lamp and actually see 3 crew members inside what appears to be a closed stateroom sitting at a table.  The hatch is encrusted solidly through rust and coral and you just see the 3 sitting there.  You wonder what they were doing.  Probably doing shots while the boat took a depth charge?

I don't know.

If this sort of alternative German sci-fi interests you you might be want to investigate a Finnish independent film that's in production.  The premise deals with Nazis launching space missions in 1944 from Antarctica to the moon.  They remain there until the year 2018 when they return from their colony back to earth.  Somewhat steampunksh.

Love the Iron Sky guys, especially the bird crap on the Iron Eagle. They are currently filming here in Australia amidst the tropical downpours of Brisbane.

Does anyone know if a Cthulhu story (post HPL) had used the Nazi's fascination with insane mysticism, the Ahnenerbe organization. and the Black Sun group etc?

Oohhh, they're using a Laibach-song in the teaser. This I must see!

Only one way to find out...read every single Mythos story ever created by August Derleth and find out. I had to stop after about the fourth AD tale...the horror...the horror...

The Delta Green stuff, as well as Charlie Stross' Laundry series, both marry up Nazi mysticism and Lovecraft, albeit historically, which is to say, the stuff is contemporary, but in the setting history, Nazis are quite prominent.

"Lovecraft's Book" aka "Marblehead" seems to deal with Nazi stuff.

My favorite Story of Lovecraft thus far (but I skipped "lurking fear" Sad ), due to all the fun of germans underwater. Geez, our does our navy suck... No, in reality I liked the anvilivious emphasize on how hard boiled this prussian douche is and the connections of plotdevices in this story. I mean: It got underwater fun, a gigantic and prehistoric City, and icon induced insanity! It is like...like...like an unnameable mutant of storys? I do not know, think of your own comparison. Normally we would get just one or two of them, I think, but here we get all of them. It could have been more loaded with these(those?), if the Protagonist would have been some kind of degenerate, but since he is prussian...maybe he is related to the habsburgians or wittelsbachians?
Of the Episode itself I like most the Jokes at the beginning, regarding the dolphins and the sinking ship. Cheesy
Again: I am sorry for the bad english.

One of my absolute favorite stories. So much character in it.

If you guys haven't checked out the movie Below, I highly recommend it. Consciously or not, it cribs a whole ton from The Temple.

Mmm.. Supernaturally sentient submarines.

If you haven't done so yet, check out the Hellboy comic book. While not specifically Mythos, Mignola takes numerous cues from Lovecraft and incorporates nazis quite often. At least in past issues. There's a great Hellboy, Batman, Starman teamup 2 issue mini that features the Knights of October, a modern day neo nazis secret organization bringing down something from the outside and they even name drop HP himself Smiley

This story combines my love of the First World War, ruthless military officers (of any nation), iron bravery in the face of certain death and creepy sunken temples into one great adventure story.

I just wish we had an entire reading of the story by Andrew Leman.  I found two audio versions of it online... but they just weren't quite what I had in mind.
