I just thought that this small bit by Carl Sagan (from "Cosmos") could give some people a better insight into what Lovecraft may be talking about when it comes to extra-dimensional things. Also that I think it gives credit to his abundant use of "indescribable" and "unimaginable" things.

I never realized the tesseract has been around so long. 1888?

Wikipedia has a very cool animation--scroll down the page--then scroll further down to the projections....yikes!

It really shows how mind boggling it is to try to conceptualize another spacial dimension. I can really understand why some Lovecraftian characters are at a loss.
but then again, sometimes it really does seem like lazy writing.
