Ha, I think you're thinking of Vingrette Thomina, his sister. If you add a dash of Vinegar Tom to Sacke & Sugar, though, you do get a primitive English sweet-and-sour sauce suitable for seasoning rarebit and barnacle goose.  |

So I bought the Masters of Horror episode Dreams in the Witch House directed by Stuart Gordon. And I want to let everyone know that it's just about the best adaptation this story could get.
[HERE BE SPOILERS]
I say this because there were some things in the plot summary on iTunes that worried me. It describes the witch as "a luscious she-demon." Turns out she's just takes the form of his hot neighbor in a dream just long enough for a gratuitous boob shot. She then reveals herself as a disgusting cackling hag mid-seduction, and Walter wakes up screaming.
But yeah, it's pretty great. It's a lot of fun to watch, it's got a great pace, very creepy and funny when it wants to be (without going all Re-Animator on it until one or two well-chosen moments near the end) and it gives the source material the best chance to land. The ending manages to put an even bleaker twist on the source story, and Brown Jenkin, as in the story, is the creepiest f*cking thing about it.
Creepiness: 8/10
Faithfulness to Lovecraft: 9/10
VFX: 5/10
Gore: comically excessive, yet restrained

Yeah Gordon's adaptation is worth seeing...I have to say I found it much superior to many of the other Masters of Horror episodes I watched via netflix.

This was the only adaptation of "Dreams in the Whitch House" I have ever seen, and I really do like it. The only thing I thought was kind of not-great was Brown Jenkins' talking and face-time (I've said before that I don't like the effects used on him, so i won't go into that again). And I don't remember Kezia (sp) Mason putting her mark on the protagonist, but it HAS been a while since I read the story, so I would be completely wrong on that count.

I was going to say something about that, but picking on special effects in a Stuart Gordon movie is a bit like picking on special effects in a Stuart Gordon movie.  And I don't remember Kezia (sp) Mason putting her mark on the protagonist, but it HAS been a while since I read the story, so I would be completely wrong on that count.

Yeah, I don't think she marks him in the story, and certainly not in the way portrayed in the movie. If she does (haven't read it in a while either), I imagine it's something like the mark on Joseph Curwen's chest - something more subtle, and more in line with the witch-lore of, say, the Malleus Maleficarum. |

Or just a time constraint. They had to cut a lot out of the story, and having her mark him could just be a convenient short-hand way to illustrate to the audience that Gilman's being stalked by a witch, and also to show the audience some boobies.
