HPL was master at mixing his fictitious locations with real life locations, or giving his fictitious locations proper placing in the world, to give them an air reality.    One of the things I've though about doing for a long time is make a Google map of locations from Lovecraft stories with the stories attached to the descriptions.  Would anyone want to help with this project?

Obviously, some locations need estimations - the towns of Lovecraft county are estimations of real towns such as Salem or somewhere in Essex County, Massachusetts.  But there are other locations that are more easily found out.

N. Latitude 45° 16', W. Longitude 28° 34': U-29 torpedoes the British freighter Victory, New York to Liverpool. (The Temple)
N. Latitude 20°, W. Longitude 35° : final resting place of submarine U-29.  (The Temple)
S. Latitude 49° 51', W. Longitude 128° 34': The Emma encounter the Alert. (The Call of Cthulhu).
S. Latitude 47° 9', W. Longitude 126° 43': Location of R'lyeh. (The Call of Cthulhu).
Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma: Location of the Indian mound which is haunted by a headless ghost. (The Mound)

the big thing is I really don't know how to work Google Maps.  I've made the google map open and public to anyone who wants to change it, so please, if you'd like to help out, post here locations or edit the google map.

The google map can be found here:

You should publish that. Like an atlas of imaginary places. Kinda like this!

Yes! There's that thing at the end of league of extraordinary gentlemen 2 that was pretty interesting.

I've never used Google Maps before; how do you add to it?

1. Open up the map.
2. Search for the place HPL based his fictional city, or real city that appears in HPL sorry, or coordinates ( 20°N, 35° W).
3. Google map will zone in on the place, and too the left it will apear on the left.  Click "save to..." and pick "The world of H.P. Lovecraft".
4. a message that says "saved location to Go to The world of H.P. Lovecraft. Click here to view".  Click here and view.
5.  Now click on your new location, and then click "edit" on the right panel.  You can now edit the information on your location.  Add info on which story its from, important information, etc etc.

And your done!

PLEASE Please help out!  Thanks so much for your interest!!!

May I respectfully suggest blocking google at all levels, from the router to the firewall to the browser on up? It is a creeping evil intent on storing extensive amounts of intelligence on every thing you do on the internet, supplying it freely to US spy agencies/banks/advertisers.

That said, I already did this a little bit in a very old version of evil Microsoft's evil Encarta map evil program. It looks to me like Dagon rose (or was it R'Lyeh? I don't have it open right now) somewhere along a line from Punto Montt, Chile and Fiji. The ancient library in Australia MIGHT be located near where some very important geological discoveries were made not too long ago, although the geologist is keeping mum on the exact location, in the interest of science. I forget exactly WHY these formations are so important, but I think it either had to do with their age, being the oldest rocks in the world, or the origins of life on earth.

Are you suggesting what I think your suggesting: that google is in reality the embryonic form of SkyNet inching its way towards the judgment day where it becomes self aware and extracts it's revenge on humanity for turning the internet from a defense research network between network between universities and defense research facilities into a porn distribution system?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?

Quick! Someone get in contact with Sarah Connor and Cameron*!!!!

Certainly not the sole person who remembers skynet.... Although I never saw it. If I'm reading you between the lines right, you're saying that I'm saying that Google is a kind of videodrome, purveying servant-and-master-style pornography while its true purpose is the carrier signal which will cause "real" hallucinations leading to programmable psychosis. Yes, that's pretty much it.

The Yith lived in their vast library city in what would later become Australia's Great Sandy Desert (22°3?14?S 125°0?39?E ).

Got that from Wikipedia. Cheesy

Btw, that's possibly my favorite Lovecraft story, "The Shadow Out of Time"
