Obviously, the best of them all is Harry Houdini. Yes, the fictional Houdini faints more than once. But that's how you know it's fiction; the real account was much more badass, but they had HPL tone it down for fear it wouldn't be believable (in reality, Houdini single-handedly killed the Living Sphinx, beat the hybrid mummies into dust, and rode off into the moonset with Queen Nitokris).

Does "The Terrible Old Man" count?

Pulp action hero/ war instigator Carter from Kadath. That guy chews battleships and spits bullets. And he's multilingual.

I'll have to go with him, then. The problems with Lovecraft's protagonists are: 1 - most of them are hapless, featureless 'Mary Sues'. and B - several of them aren't terribly admirable to begin with. But then, I don't suppose one reads Lovecraft looking for characters with which to identify.

My favorite protagonist has to be Daniel Upton from "The Thing on the Doorstep". This guy knows something is up and actively takes and interest in helping his friend Edward Derby try to get out of it. Even though he does faint (DAMN YOU HPL!!!!!!) near the end of things, he has the balls (big brass ones I would assume) to walk into an asylum in broad daylight and shoot Derby's body to death in plane view of witnesses. I even love the last line of the story when he more or less chalanges the spirit of Ephraim Waite to do it's worst. This guy is one bad-ass New Englander.

Carter. I dunno why, he's a total self-insert Gary Stu and would be considered the product of terrible writing nowadays but he's just so unabashedly undefeatable. I mean, he walks away from conversations with Outer Gods with his wits intact, speaks cat, and even ends up in the body of a giant bug-monster and never loses his cool (apart from the occasional fainting).

Hmmm...for me, it would be two characters from CDW. I would have to say either Curwen or Willet. Curwen because let's face it, he cheated death and who wouldn't want knowledge like that and Dr. Willet because he has to be the most tenacious, obstinate physician since House, M.D.. I mean if I were ill, I would want Willet as my doc, he will go to the ends of the earth to figure out what's wrong with you!

And then battle the dark forces that have robbed you of your identity, consigning them to their essential salts and making sure you get a proper burial as well. Bob

One point against Willet: if you send him a note saying that not only your life but the fate of the solar system is in danger if he doesn't come see you as soon as possible, he will treat it like any other follow-up appointment and shelve it for about a week.

Herbert West, of course!!!! That's a strong-willed guy, who is not deterred by the insignificant problems which happen during his experiments from time to time. We need more true scientists like him!!

I think Herbert West is much more of an antagonist than a protagonist. Bob

Bob
Perhaps, but antagonist to whom? Not to the narrator, the ever loyal sidekick. To the zombies that kill him at the end? Well... then, if West can't be chosen as protagonist, I suppose I can't choose my other favourite "protagonist", Mr. Richard Upton Pickman? Well, then... Randolph Carter, I suppose...
