Chris, I will not say your interpretation of this story(as a psychological horror/descent into madness yarn) is misguided, but I will say it is the mirror reflection of Lovecraft’s own view, which reduced the whole thing to an alien invation horror story. Why reduce it though? The author treads the tightrope carefully, and preserves the tale’s mistery by keeping it ambivalent. You could say it’s left suspended in an indeterminate zone between several possible worlds… which is a feat common to almost all great fantastical literature, I think.
