Funnily enough, this was also the first Lovecraftian bit of fiction I read as well! I remember it being in an Alfred Hitchcock collection of weird/spooky stories along with the Upper Berth. Not sure if it’s in the same collection. I think it was Haunted Houseful or Ghostly Gallery or even Monster Museum. Great story!

Gosh, this is one of the scariest Lovecraftian stories I’ve ever encountered. Much scarier than most of Lovecraft’s own stories, I’d say. Maybe it’s the combination of terror and tragedy that Willie Osborne goes through, losing his whole family before they come for him. The only Lovecraft story that I can think of that evokes a similar combination of sadness and horror is “The Colour out of Space,” which is one of his best ones. And I’d say that this story is even better than that one.

I know I’m years late on this but I need to mention what a great job Chris did on the straight delivery of a classic Spinal Tap reference. Heather did an amazing job bringing Willie’s voice to life. I also wanted to let readers know that an online version of this story is available (I assume legally) at https://nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/sffaudio-usa/usa-pdfs/NotebookFoundInADesertedHouseByRobertBloch.pdf. It’s a PDF of the original Weird Tales publication so it also contains the crazy creepy artwork that was published with the original story.

Re-listening to this in 2020, after the end of the “Lovecraft Country” t.v. season, I’m chilled to the bone again with Bloch’s description of the carriage being chased by the dark, smokey shoggoths. Heather’s delivery of Willie’s voice is super effective all throughout this pulse-increasing tale.
